This Sunday, June 12th, I woke up earlier than usual determined to attend the 9am service at CCF. Unusual because I have been going to a different church for the past five months closer to home.
I passed by a room that had a sign that says”Life to the Max” with a health talk topic about the Complications of Diabetes happening right after the service.
Here are the notes I took from the talk by Dr. Henry V. Yu MD FPCP
Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 Complications
When not treated properly, diabetes affects major organs such as the
- heart
- blood vessels
- nerves
- eyes
- kidneys
*mildly raised blood glucose levels that does not show any symptoms can have long term damaging effects. Symptoms may appear after 3-5 years.
Action step: Be screened for diabetes
Diagnostic
- CBC – check for blood infection
- BUN – check hydration level
- Creatinine – kidney renal failure
- Random blood sugar (hourly, initially)
- Urinalysis
- Electrolytes (NA, K, Cl)
- Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) – check oxygen and carbon dioxide level
- Chest Xray (PA)
- ECG – pre heart attack
- blood culture – organisms
Concern: Hyperglycemia Glucose levels above 250-600 mg
Action: Go to hospital for thorough evaluation and treatment.
- check hydration status – when dehydrated, aggressive IV fluids are administered or else blood pressure will become low and patient goes into shock
- Insulin
- Electrolyte status – potassium level, need for bicarbonate. *potassium level – heart beat strength, body muscle strength
- determine the cause (infection, myocardial, infraction or other illness) stress (blood sugar)
Concern: Hypoglycemia Glucose levels 50-60 mg or lower
Symptoms:
- weakness, sweating, hunger, tingling of mouth or fingers
- neuro mental dullness, headache, confusion, amnesia, seizure, coma
Causes
- Drug induced (insulin SU) some diabetic meds can cause hypoglycemia risk
- Diet –

Action: Inject insulin, eat after 30 minutes.
Treatment: common available source of 10g of glucose
